Jamaica - Caribbean Paradise Island

Welcome to Jamaica the third largest island of the Caribben and the birthplace of Bob Marley and James Bond. A paradise place that is both unique and familiar with beaches that strecth "clear blue" forever. And the seemingly endless hours of warm Caribbean sunshine. A trip to Jamaica may include river rafting, waterfall climbing, horseback riding, beachcombing, ballooning, diving, mountain biking, snorkeling or just relaxing in a swaying hammock watching the sunset.

Though the majority of the population is from African decent, there are people from Eurpean, Arabic, Chinese and East Indian ancestry as well. The Jamaica people are multiracial blend. Once a Spanish colony, Jamaica came under the British rule in 1655 until 1962 when the county became and independent nation. Larger and more varied than most visitors expect, Jamaica can't be explored in a few days. Its diverse physical beauty makes it an island that appeals to visitors worldwide. From the high peaks of the Blue Mountan, the dramatic water falls, white sanded beaches Jamaica is waiting to be discovered by you. There is no place on Earth like Jamaica.

Tourist Attractions in Jamaica

Island Village

Island Village is the first of its kind in Jamaica - a theme park offering an endless array of activities and stores. It features the top Jamaican stores, selling a range of products such as duty-free items, clothing, souvenirs, specialty goods, CDs, books and art. There's also a Reggae museum, art gallery, arcade, cinema, casino, cyber café and water sports centre. With just one visit to Island Village, you'll get a sense of Jamaica - its beauty, culture and creativity.

In this aesthetically pleasing setting, Island Village offers the best and latest technology and attractions. It is home to Ocho Rios' only Reggae museum, Reggae Xplosion, an interactive museum that tells the tale of Jamaica's musical history. Adding to Island Village's appeal is the Cove Cinema, a cutting-edge 200-seat multimedia facility; Eight Rivers Casino, an adult gaming lounge; Galaxy Arcade, sporting the latest video games; and Cyber Jungle, a digital communications centre. And on the edge of the beach, you'll find Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, a happening and always-popular beach bar and restaurant - day or night.

Port Antonio's Hidden Beaches

Port Antonio's bigger beaches - Frenchman's Cove, Winnifred and Boston Bay - are well-travelled, stunning locales. But tracking down the off-the-beaten-path beaches, such as Shanshy Beach and Ras Johnson's Ranch, can be gratifying, providing you with serenity and exposure to the authentic Jamaica and its rustic charms.

Shanshy Beach Complex lies to the west of Port Antonio, just outside of the entrance to the town. It is a popular spot among Port Antonio residents, and is sometimes used for local concerts and other events. The beach rests a few feet below the main road, but is hardly visible from above. Colourful concrete buildings line the back of the beach, including a bar, restaurant, changing area and bathrooms. Outside of the buildings, overgrown train tracks run through a grassy patch bordering the sand.

Gunboat Beach

Gunboat Beach is a popular destination in Jamaica, perhaps more for its entertainment features than the actual beach-going experience. Most
visitors to Gunboat Beach are locals who come to socialize along the shore, especially since the waters of this beach have succumbed to pollution and swimming is no longer recommended. Gunboat Beach is conveniently located, and there is a lot of activity there. Located on the southeastern coast of Jamaica, it is about seven miles from Fort Charles and close to Portmore, so you can easily make a visit to the town.

Grande Beach

Grande Beach is a stunning public beach located on the northeastern coast of Jamaica, just 0.1 miles from the Sunset Jamaica Grande Resort and Spa. Grande Beach is near Ocho Rios too; so exploring the town during a visit to the beach is an easy and attractive option. The popular activity at Grande Beach is parasailing, so it’s perfect for those desiring to participate in this sport.

Jamaica is the largest English-speaking island in the Caribbean and the third largest in the region. With a total land area of 4,442 square miles (10,991 sq. km), the island is 146 miles long with widths varying between 22 and 51 miles (35 and 82 km). Situated ninety miles south of Cuba and six hundred miles south of Miami, Jamaica is 18 degrees north of the equator. More precisely, Jamaica lies between latitudes 17 degrees 43 minutes and 18 degrees 32 minutes north and longitudes 76 degrees, 11 minutes and 78 degrees, 23 minutes west.

Jamaica map
Jamaica is divided into three counties, Cornwall, Middlesex and Surrey. These counties are further subdivided into parishes with Kingston, the smallest of the 14 parishes, as home to the capital city. The terrain is very mountainous with much of the land rising above 1,000 feet (305 km). The highest point, Blue Mountain Peak, is 7,402 feet (2,256 m) above sea level. Complementing our mountains, Jamaica also brims with valleys and plains. The five major plains – Vere, St Jago, George’s, Liguanea and Pedro – provide the backbone for our largely agricultural economy.
